For a good portion of the U.S., snow and icy-cold conditions are expected to stir up a lot of trouble this weekend — and just for the record, it might be too late in many areas to grab that extra gallon of milk if you haven’t already gone to the grocery store. Meanwhile, Baptist disaster relief teams are ready to go in 11 states — from Texas to the Carolinas, according to Coy Webb, crisis response director for Send Relief, on Friday morning (Jan. 23).

As the weekend begins, forecasters predict heavy snow, sleet, dangerous ice and frigid temperatures from Texas to New England. The winter blast is expected to carry through Monday of next week. Amid the early threats of ice expected in the South and Plains, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration for 134 counties to speed response, reported The World and Everything in It podcast.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm’s threat of dangerous travel, school closures and disrupted flight schedules could impact more than 170 million people, according to news reports. And don’t expect next week’s temperatures to provide much relief, forecasters predict, as another week of freezing temperatures is expected.
