Catastrophic flooding devastates northeastern Libya

Mediterranean storm Daniel released torrential rains overwhelming usually dry riverbeds and collapsing two dams in Libya. At least 2,000 have died and as many as 10,000 more are missing, CNN reported.

The town of Derna was especially hit hard with as many as 6,000 missing.

Emergency workers have already recovered hundreds of bodies in Derna, according to the Associated Press.

“The startling death and devastation wreaked by Mediterranean storm Daniel pointed to the storm’s intensity, but also the vulnerability of a nation torn apart by chaos for more than a decade,” AP reported.

Help from outside the country is just beginning to trickle in more than 36 hours after the flooding occurred.

Morocco

Meanwhile in Morocco, rescue teams continue to dig through the rubble for survivors after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake rocked the country’s High Atlas Mountains on Sept. 8.

The death toll has reportedly risen to more than 2,800 have died, and more than 2,500 have been injured.

Southern Baptists’ compassion ministry arm, Send Relief, is working through ministry partners to get help and supplies to those in need.
