Biden steps aside as nominee; questions loom for voters

Following weeks of pressure from fellow Democrats, President Joe Biden announced Sunday (July 21) he will not seek reelection. While he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, many questions remain, including who will ultimately be on the presidential ticket in November.

Biden announced his decision on the social media platform X: “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.

“I will speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision.”

Biden endorsement enough?

Following his initial announcement, he followed up with an endorsement of Harris.

“Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” he said in another post on X. “Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump.”

Whether or not the Democratic Party will nominate Harris to be the nominee during the upcoming Democrat National Convention (Aug. 19–22) remains unknown. For more on last weeks Republican National Convention, click here.
