It was a day not spent in typical fashion by Highland Baptist Church in Princeton, Kentucky, members and volunteers as they became “the hands and feet of Jesus” — providing 468 meals free to the community.
Pastor Phillip Whitaker said “The Savior’s Dinner of Love” — which was held Thanksgiving Day and now in its 19th year — involves more than just Highland Baptist.
Team effort
“We have volunteers who come from other churches in town. It’s a God thing — we couldn’t pull this off by ourselves. We are a small church, running between 40 and 50 on Sunday, but the Lord has been gracious and blessed us. It’s been a blessing to be their pastor and watch God at work.”
Most of the cooking and assembly of the homemade meals is handled by church members while volunteers from other churches show up on Thanksgiving morning and primarily are involved in delivering meals.
Whitaker said about 90% of the meals are delivered within the city in the 11 a.m.–1 p.m. time frame. This year those deliveries included stops at two nursing homes and the county jail.
