7 things members need to hear to increase year-end giving

Year-end giving is an important moment for every church. It’s when many are open to generosity but need clear guidance and encouragement to act.

Want more participation? Here’s what they need to hear to inspire giving (while building trust):

1. A Clear vision for their gifts’ impact. Generosity makes a difference. So, share compelling stories of lives changed through your church’s ministries.

Be specific — talk about the families fed, the missions supported, or the community transformed. Use real names and photos (with permission, of course) to bring these stories to life. Avoid being too general; targeted clarity connects heart and wallet.

2. Transparency about financial needs. Honesty builds trust. Communicate your financial situation with clarity and without panic. Let members know the progress toward year-end goals and how much is still needed.

Break down numbers into digestible components (e.g., “If 10 families gave $500 each, we’ll reach our goal.” This helps members see how they can play a part in an overall dream.

3. Biblical teaching on generosity. Remind your congregation of the biblical foundation for giving. Passages like 2 Cor 9:7 (“God loves a cheerful giver”) and Acts 20:35 (“It is more blessed to give than to receive”) encourage hearts to align with God’s principles.

Don’t overdo it or make it self-serving. Keep it brief and inspirational. This is about encouragement to worship, not an obligation to do.

4. Ways to give that are simple and accessible. Make giving as easy as possible. In our digital world, it’s quite easy to give right up to December 31.

Highlight options like online platforms, text-to-give, or designated offering envelopes. Provide step-by-step instructions for each method. Always emphasize the security and convenience of the tools, especially for older members who are skeptical.

5. A sense of urgency. Urgency inspires action, but pressure can backfire. Set a specific deadline — e.g., “Contributions must be received by Dec. 31 to count for this year’s goals!” Pair this with gratitude for what has already been given, showing members that their gifts really matter.

6. Heartfelt gratitude. Thank your members sincerely and often. Express your appreciation during services, in emails, and on social media.

Acknowledge their sacrifices and their role in furthering God’s work. Gratitude isn’t just being polite; it’s a powerful motivator for ongoing generosity.

7. An invitation. Encourage members to pray about their giving. It’s an act of worship and faith, not just a financial transaction. Invite them to seek God’s guidance for their year-end contributions.

Demonstrate to them how you’re dreaming big. And encourage them to join the faith challenge.

This is about deepening the connection between your members and the mission God has entrusted to your church. Communication is key. Not just at year-end but year-round as a generosity value of your ministry.
