Unprecedented flooding is the latest in a series of weather events that have devastated this small western Kentucky community.
Rainfall totaled 13.4 inches from last Wednesday until Sunday, according to the Dawson Springs Police Department. The flooding made national news on both NBC and CBS, with NBC sending a reporter to Dawson Springs.

The flooding follows tornadoes in 2021 and 2024, but despite the setbacks, “the community is doing well,” said Mike Jicka, pastor of Dawson Springs First Baptist Church.
“People are rallying and helping each other out,” Jicka said. “It’s really cool to watch people helping their brothers and sisters out.” He said the community is now waiting for floodwaters to recede, and that First Baptist “is here for anybody. People can call and ask for anything.” This is the second disaster for the community during Jicka’s time as pastor in Dawson Springs.
“We have tried to be a light in the middle of these disasters. We want to show the love of Christ, which includes opening our doors to anything people need.” In the past, the church provided a place for people to shower and do their laundry. “We are here to do whatever people need.”
