Winter storm update: Baptist teams tackle icy conditions to help those in need

The loud crunch of snow and ice could be heard on Nashville area roads Monday morning (Jan. 26) as local residents navigated the treacherous conditions — which included downed trees and drooping powerlines here and there. Tennessee was among the many states hit over the weekend by a massive winter storm that swept across much of the U.S.

The fallout from the storm continues to disrupt travel and has left more than 1 million people without power nationwide, according to news reports. Meanwhile, Southern Baptist disaster relief teams are responding to the damage.

Providing warmth

As impacted residents shovel and scrape there way out from the storm, Baptist teams are supporting warming centers in places like Saline County, Arkansas and Louisiana, while Texans on Mission is partnering with local churches to feed the homeless and provide shelter in Texas, reported Send Relief crisis response director Coy Webb. Ministry centers in St. Louis, Memphis and Ashland are reportedly staged as regional response hubs.

Authorities have reported multiple storm-related deaths, including at least two from hypothermia in Louisiana and five others in New York City, according to the Louisiana Department of Health and Associated Press.
