Deadly earthquakes in Indonesia, Colombia take toll on effected areas

Damage from deadly earthquakes continue to wreak havoc in Indonesia and Colombia. Over the weekend, a magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck eastern Indonesia, reportedly killing at least 53 people. More than 130 were injured and 5,000 residents were forced into temporary shelters, according to the latest reports. Nearly 1,000 aftershocks were also reported, and landslides blocked roads and slowed rescue efforts.

Among the damage, were more than 900 homes and 100 public facilities destroyed — this reportedly included schools, medical centers and churches. Food, water, blankets and medicine have reached isolated villages with help from rescue workers.

Colombia

Colombia’s death toll from a magnitude-7.4 earthquake a week earlier has risen to at least 288, with more than 200 people missing, The World and Everything in It podcast reported. Officials have shifted the Colombian operation from rescue to recovery.
