Kansas-Nebraska DR team ‘stepped up’ amid Hurricane Ida damage

A team from six associations in Kansas-Nebraska Convention of Southern Baptists recently worked together in south Louisiana rebuilding homes that were damaged by Hurricane Ida this past August.

“These were homes that had been cleaned and prepped by our teams after the storm had passed,” said Chuck Neece, KNCSB interim director of disaster relief.

Neece noted, “Additionally, our groups were supported by a Southern Baptist church in Texarkana, Texas, providing housing on the trip down and back. The Louisiana Baptist Convention provided shower and laundry facilities, while local churches provided housing and assisted with construction materials.”

New roof, electrical wiring and more

Jerry Niederklein, a KNCSB disaster relief volunteer from Nebraska, is working in south Louisiana for several weeks. He is based at First Baptist Church Golden Meadow. See the following report about the KNCSB team that worked Jan. 7-14:

A home in Golden Meadow needed a new roof, “but the homeowners could not afford even asphalt shingles,” Niederklein said. “First Baptist Church Dighton, Kansas, stepped up and provided all the metal roofing materials. Praise the Lord!

“More than that, four men came down from the church to install the new metal roof.”

Other volunteers joined the four men from FBC Dighton.

“They were able to completely reroof this house in just four days!” he said. “It is exciting to see how God provides just the materials we need. When we went shopping for the metal roofing materials, we could only find 10 corner pieces. We thought we needed 11, but bought the 10, hoping we could make them work. We only needed only 10 corner pieces!”

Team leader Elijah “Touch” Touchton led installation of new electrical wiring in two homes in the Golden Meadow area.

How you can help

Niederklein is raising his own funds for buying materials to rebuild homes damaged by Hurricane Ida. For those who would like to help, send contributions to FBC Golden Meadow, 187 Oakridge Dr., Golden Meadow, LA 70357. Put “Rebuild Project – JN” in the memo line.

Prayers and financial support are needed to support KNCSB Disaster Relief. Contributions can be sent to KNCSB and designate them for Disaster Relief. Send them to KNCSB, 5410 SW 7th St., Topeka, KS 66606-2398.
