Barrett Duke retires as Montana exec, search team begins work

Barrett Duke has retired as executive director of the Montana Southern Baptist Convention after more than eight years of leadership.

Since taking the role in 2017, Duke has helped strengthen the convention’s ministry and unity, tripled the number of church planters, surpassed pre-COVID baptism levels, relocated the state office to Helena, and built key partnerships — including adopting Alberta, Canada, as a missions partner.

Search committee

As he transitions out, a search committee led by Greg Payton of The Rock Church in Laurel will begin accepting applications June 9.

Payton praised Duke’s passion for evangelism, support for pastors and leadership in expanding gospel reach in a largely unreached state. Right now, Montana has 119 Southern Baptist churches.

Duke, 70, plans to return to Maryland to be near family and is open to future ministry or public policy work.
