Calling for prayer: 2022 Winter Olympics puts spotlight on persecuted Christians in China

Calling for prayer: 2022 Winter Olympics puts spotlight on persecuted Christians in China

As the eyes of the world turn to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics Feb. 4–20, The Voice of the Martyrs is calling for prayer for persecuted Chinese believers.

At PrayForChina2022.com, believers can commit to participate in this worldwide prayer campaign, receive prayer updates, invite others to pray through social media, add prayer reminders to their calendar and learn more about how the communist Chinese government persecutes Christians within its borders.

A reminder to pray

“Our hope is [that] thousands, even millions, of people around the world are going to be watching the Olympic games,” said VOM spokesperson Todd Nettleton. “We hope that every single one of those events and every single one of those moments is a reminder … we have spiritual family members there [in China], and they are being persecuted. They are suffering at the hands of the communist government.

“Let’s not just enjoy the Olympics and cheer on our country. … Let’s use this as a reminder to pray for our brothers and sisters who live in China and who face persecution there. … Our prayers really do make a difference.”

More resources

VOM’s 2022 Global Prayer Guide classifies China as a restricted nation where government-sanctioned circumstances or anti-Christian laws lead to Christians being harassed, imprisoned, killed or deprived because of their witness and also where government policy or practice prevents Christians from obtaining Bibles or other Christian literature.

Open Doors’ World Watch List designates China, home to 1.4 billion people or 20% of the world’s population, as the 17th most difficult country in the world to follow Jesus.

Because of the sacrificial 39-year missionary service of Lottie Moon in China more than 100 years ago, Southern Baptists have long been committed to praying for and sending missionaries to China and throughout the world. Moon is the the namesake of Southern Baptists’ annual international missions offering.
