Brent Leatherwood, president of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, said his entity had two defunding questions on its plate June 11 as he delivered ERLC’s report to the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Dallas.
The event centered around the U.S. v. Skrmetti case that involves preventing healthcare providers from prescribing medications or performing procedures on minors to “transition” to an identity opposite of their biological sex.
The resolutions committee released the proposed resolutions May 30 because of a bylaw change in 2023, which now requires the release at least 10 days ahead of the annual meeting. Previously, messengers received them at the meeting.
“Every entity — including the ERLC — should be open to critique and committed to improvement. But there is a difference between refinement and eradication. A sledgehammer is not the tool for adjusting a mirror.”
Debate about the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission and whether it should continue has repeatedly surfaced at the Southern Baptist Convention annual meetings in recent years.
“Along the way, my mom had some pretty tough rules that have mostly fallen out of fashion since those days. But after a few decades, I wonder if they weren’t so bad.”
While compulsive sports gambling begins as an individual issue, its “ripple effects” are felt throughout society, said RaShan Frost, director of research with the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission.
The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention has joined with SBC leaders and pastors in calling on legislators to take concrete steps in a reconciliation bill that would defund Planned Parenthood.
“Here’s the truth: your story matters. Your testimony matters. And even if no one believes you, there’s someone out there who desperately needs to hear it,” writes Tony Martin, editor of The Baptist Record.
