A Muslim mob injured Christians, destroyed homes and looted Christian-owned shops and businesses May 20 after their plan to attack a woman was thwarted.
The mob in Katanga village of Bauchi state wanted to attack Rhoda Jatau, whom they accused of sharing on the WhatsApp platform a video insulting to Islam, reported the relief group Barnabas Fund.
The mob did not find Jatau because she had been taken to a secure location. They then attacked a Christian community, injured several and set buildings on fire.
The video in question allegedly was from a convert from Islam in Ghana who was protesting the clubbing and stoning death of Deborah Samuel, a Christian who was slain May 12 in Nigeria (see story here). She allegedly made “derogatory comments” about Muhammad (Islam’s prophet) on the WhatsApp platform, Barnabas Fund stated. A Muslim mob killed her at Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto state, where she was a student, and set her body on fire.
Nigeria is No. 7 on Open Doors’ 2022 World Watch List of places most difficult to be a Christian.
