A sophomore at Boyce College has filed a religious discrimination complaint after being fired from a coffee shop in Louisville, Kentucky, according to Decision Magazine. Boyce College is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Paige Rogers said coworkers at Heine Brothers Coffee initiated conversations about her Christian beliefs on marriage and faith during a shift last October. Rogers stated in the complaint, “I respectfully shared about God’s design for marriage and sex, and that while I don’t judge anyone for their decisions, my faith plays a huge role in how I approach the topic, and that I seek to honor God with my decisions.”
“Chilling” response
Twelve days later, Rogers was fired for comments deemed “unwelcome and offensive.” First Liberty Institute and Sturgill Turner filed a discrimination charge with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on her behalf. Attorney Cliff Martin called the firing “chilling,” arguing employees should not have to hide their faith.
