An evangelical church was among the buildings impacted by a deadly gas explosion that rocked Athens’ historic Plaka district, near the Acropolis in Greece, on Friday (Sept. 25), according to various news outlets.
The blast destroyed a two-story building and killed six people — including four Americans — Greek authorities and U.S. officials reported. Two other people in a neighboring building were also reportedly injured.
‘Heartbreaking’
As a result of extensive window damage caused by the blast, First Greek Evangelical Church of Athens moved Sunday worship outdoors, CBS News reported. Pastor Giotis Kantartzis described the tragedy as “heartbreaking,” according to CBS News.
Meanwhile, authorities recovered the victims during an overnight search. The investigation into the blast continues.
