First person: Pastor, protect clarity like you protect theology

Pastor, you work hard to protect your church’s theology. You guard the pulpit, examine what’s taught and make sure the Gospel isn’t diluted or distorted. And rightly so — eternity matters.

But what if we protected clarity like we protect theology?

I recently asked that question at a ministry conference, and the response was remarkable.

Gasps. Knowing nods. It struck a nerve because many church leaders recognize a growing problem: we’re working hard to communicate the greatest message in the world, but sometimes we’re making it difficult for people to hear it.

When good intentions create noise

Every ministry has something important to announce. Every event needs promotion. Every pastor has a message to share. Meanwhile, your communication person juggles graphics, videos, emails, campaigns and social media posts, all with good intentions. It’s a lot.

But collectively, these messages can overwhelm the people we’re trying to reach. Websites become crowded, emails become exhausting, and announcements compete for attention. Somewhere in all that activity, the most important message gets lost.

We can be theologically accurate and still be communication failures.

The gospel hasn’t lost its power, but our communication can create unnecessary barriers between that message and the people who need to hear it. When people struggle to understand what we’re saying or why your church matters to them, we may be making it harder for them to take a step toward Jesus.

Clarity is a leadership responsibility

We often treat clarity as a creative preference, something to consider after the sermon is written and the content schedule is planned. That’s backward. Before asking how to communicate something creatively, ask whether we’ve made it clear. Before adding another announcement, decide what deserves attention. Maybe, less is more.

Church branding is much more than logos, colors and fonts. It’s the intentional work of helping people understand who your church is, what matters most, and why it matters to them. A clear message helps you communicate consistently and gives your community a better chance of understanding how the gospel connects with their lives.

Clarity doesn’t replace creativity. It gives creativity a purpose. Simplicity doesn’t dilute the gospel. It removes unnecessary obstacles so people can see the truth more clearly.

So, protect what matters most

Imagine if you, or your leadership team, reviewed major communications with the same care you give to what’s taught from your pulpit. Ask three simple questions:

1. Is it clear? Will people understand our message?

2. Is it focused? Does it support what matters most?

3. Is it necessary? Can we say it more simply?

These questions can begin changing your church’s communication culture. You don’t always need to communicate more to reach more. Sometimes, you need to remove the noise so they can hear what you’ve been saying all along.

This week, challenge your leaders to protect clarity as fiercely as you protect theology. Getting the message right matters eternally. Helping people hear it matters, too. For the sake of the gospel.
