First person: The valuable resource disappearing from your church every day

Walk into almost any church communications or media office, and you’ll find talented people running at full speed. They’re building announcement slides, editing videos that were requested an hour ago, fixing website glitches, resizing graphics and answering a steady stream of “Can you do this real quick?” requests.

They look busy because they are busy.

The problem is that busyness isn’t the same as creativity.

Time to think

The best ideas don’t arrive while you’re racing from one emergency to the next. They need space. Time to think. Time to observe. Time to ask better questions. Yet many gifted communicators never get that opportunity because they’re trapped in a cycle of reacting instead of creating.

Church leaders understand the importance of protecting financial resources. Budgets are planned. Expenses are reviewed. Waste is challenged.

Creative time deserves the same protection.

If urgent requests consume every hour, your communications team will eventually stop producing fresh ideas. They’ll become production managers instead of creative leaders. That’s a loss for the entire ministry because great communication begins with insight, not software.

Block uninterrupted hours for strategic thinking. Push back on unnecessary last-minute projects. Bring your creative team into leadership conversations before decisions are made, not after they’re announced.

Your church doesn’t need people who can simply make things look better. It needs people who can help the message connect with the culture.

Your greatest creative asset isn’t your camera or YouTube channel.

It’s uninterrupted thinking.
