Of the total, $5.5 million resolves litigation between Falwell and the university, while the remaining $9.7 million is tied to his retirement package, according to USA Today, which reportedly broke the story. Falwell has also reportedly repaid $440,000 to Liberty for disputed expenses.
Allegations
The scandal involved allegations that Falwell’s wife, Becki, had a years-long affair with a younger man, who claimed Falwell watched the encounters. Falwell denied involvement but admitted his wife had an inappropriate relationship. The university has declined media requests for comment.
The settlement ends years of legal disputes between the two parties. Falwell, son of Liberty’s founder, led the school from 2007–2020.
