Missionary killed in Angola, wife taken into custody

Authorities in Angola continue to investigate the tragic death of a missionary, who was fatally stabbed Oct. 25. Further adding to the tragedy, the wife of the missionary has been taken into custody, along with at least two other suspects, in connection with the murder.

Beau and Jackie Shroyer, both 44, reportedly stopped to help motorists who appeared to be stranded alongside a road outside Lubango, where the family lived, when the attack happened.

The Shroyers moved to Angola with their five children in 2021 to serve in youth outreach with SIM USA. The family’s home church is Lakes Area Vineyard Church in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

‘Grief and sadness’

“As you all know, our community has been deeply saddened by the death of our dear brother and friend Beau Shroyer, who was killed in a violent, criminal attack in Angola, Africa on Friday, October 25,” the church said in a statement that was updated Nov. 1. “Today, our grief and sadness has deepened immeasurably as we’ve learned that his wife, Jackie Shroyer, has been arrested in connection with his death.

“This is unimaginable, and yet it is very real. As a community we must cry out to the Lord for his grace, mercy and comforting presence for the Shroyer children and family.”

SIM USA released the following statement:

“The global SIM community is heartbroken over the death of our friend and colleague Beau Shroyer, who was killed in a violent criminal attack in Angola on Friday, October 25. We are shocked and devastated to learn that his wife, Jackie Shroyer, has been arrested in connection with his death.

SIM is grateful to Angolan law enforcement for their diligence in investigating this matter and encourages patience and respect for all involved as the legal process unfolds. SIM remains committed to supporting the ongoing pursuit of justice for Beau and has taken steps to ensure that Jackie has appropriate legal representation.

The SIM USA leadership team is working closely with the SIM team in Angola and with the Shroyers’ home church, Lakes Area Vineyard Church in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, to care for the Shroyers’ five children and everyone else affected by this tragedy. We continue to keep them all in our prayers.

Out of respect for the ongoing investigation and those experiencing unimaginable grief and loss during this time, SIM is unable to provide further comment.”
