Pressley: Gospel ‘drive’ keeps SBC strong

As he nears the end of his second term as SBC president, and with Valentine’s Day weekend in the rearview mirror, Clint Pressley reflected Monday evening (Feb. 16) on what he loves about Southern Baptists — and ways they all need to pray for the Convention.

Preaching from Colossians 1:1–14, Pressley addressed the tension between loving the work of the Convention and wrestling with areas Baptists don’t always agree. He believes it’s Southern Baptists’ drive for spreading the gospel that helps keeps the Convention together.

“We’re not perfect, we don’t overlook problems,” he noted. “But it’s OK to say, ‘we’re strong, gospel-centered, mission-driven, consumed … strangely consumed by the desire to see people actually won to Christ. And it’s that drive that keeps us coming back into this room. It’s that drive that keeps us together.”

Pressley specifically noted he’s thankful of Southern Baptists’ focus on the gospel, the Southern Baptist family and their love and care for each other and the “clear hope” they have as believers.

Ways to pray

Among those things to pray for, Pressley said Baptist leaders need to pray for “genuine-spiritual wisdom,” “right living” and a “grateful attitude” for God’s power.

“Brothers and sisters, let’s remember what to be thankful for. Let’s remember how to pray, lets make sure that the Lord will find us this year as Southern Baptists walking worthy.”

While my guess is as good as anyone else’s, the relationship is likely to continue largely unchanged, but not without some tension along the way. Governance and sexuality are recurring sources of the tension.
