The president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, an Oklahoma pastor who combined humor with a sharp gospel message and the dynamic son of a legendary Baptist pastor spoke in the Monday evening session (March 11) of the REACH Evangelism and Missions Conference in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
Danny Akin, Craig Pendergraft and Chip Luter delivered messages in different ways, in what was described as a “strong” and “powerful” night of gospel presentations, Kentucky Today reported.
REACH concludes Tuesday at Severns Valley Baptist Church with Jay Strack and Hershael York bringing the messages.
The conference included two days of breakout sessions covering a variety of topics. Tuesday’s breakouts begin at 9 a.m. The plenary session begins at 10:30 a.m.
Overcoming troubling facts
Danny Akin, president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, spoke from the book of Revelation about Jesus being worthy of making disciples of the nations.
Noting that Southern Baptists are known as Great Commission people, Akin said there are troubling facts about what regular church attenders know about it.
He noted, “Only 17% can identify where the Great Commission is found and define it.” And 50% say they have never heard of the Great Commission and cannot correctly identify it, nor do they view missions as a mandate for the entire church, and that only 37% pray for global missions on a weekly basis when they gather for worship.”
Akin gave three reasons why Christians are to fulfill the Great Commission. He said, “We should go because Jesus Christ is the Lord of history, the Lord is worthy and He is the Lord of glory.”
