Woman survives, man dies in separate attacks over faith

KIBUKU DISTRICT, Uganda — A Christian woman survived an attempt on her life, but a Christian man was killed in Uganda because of his faith.

Tabiruka Tefiiro was killed Aug. 15 by his father in Bupalama village for refusing to recant his Christian faith. His father beat him with a knife and hoe until unconscious, then hanged him.

Kasimu Kawona was charged with manslaughter, not murder, because he killed his son in anger for leaving Islam.

Tefiiro had become a Christian in 2019.

In a village near Kasasira, Harriet Nanzala was attacked with a knife and spear on Aug. 8 after her brother discovered she was secretly a Christian. Nanzala had left her Muslim husband after converting from Islam more than 20 years ago. She lived with her two daughters and cared for her aging mother.

Nanzala’s brother, Kowa Mugooda, was taken by police as he shouted that he would kill Nanzala upon his release.

Uganda’s constitution and laws provide religious freedom. Muslims make up no more than 12 percent of the population.

Shaped by grace: Developing godly character for young men

Something has gone wrong with the picture of manhood in our culture. On one side, there is a  version of masculinity that measures a man by his toughness, his conquests and his refusal to show weakness. On the other hand, there is an apologetic passivity that has little to offer a young man searching for a worthy vision of what he ought to become.
